Square Baby Hat

One night, eight months pregnant, I wanted to make one of these square hats for another woman who was due to have her first child the following week.  Although these silly squared off hats are common enough kid wear, I could not find a pattern for one anywhere!  So I wrote my own and share it here and on Ravelry to save others my, um, anguish.  It knit up in about 3 hrs or less (and I am not particularly speedy and am often distracted).

Size

To fit a newborn infant (14″ head circumference).  Finished hat measures 6.5″ wide and 5.5″ long.  I know, not a perfect square shape but I’m not telling if you’re not telling.

Materials

Worsted weight wool, 50g plus extra for tassels.  I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease (85g/180m) in Gold.  My finished hat (slightly damp) weighs 49g so you might be able to get the entire hat, including tassels, out of one 50g skein.

US 6 (4.25mm) double pointed needles.  You could also use two circulars.

Tassel-maker.  I made my own using the directions found on this site.

Tapestry needle and snips.

Gauge

4.5 sts per inch in stockinette stitch.

Directions

CO 64 sts.

Knit 3, purl 1 ribbing for 1.75″.

Then knit in stockinette stitch until hat measures 5.5″ from cast on edge.

Finish hat using a three-needle bind off.  If you’ve never done it before, give it a try.  Despite the name, it is not very different from the traditional bind off and (IMO) easier and more tidy than kitchener stitch.  You will need to turn the hat inside out before beginning so that the right sides are facing each other.  A video tutorial can be found at the bottom of the page of bind off techniques at KnittingHelp.com.

Finishing

Make two tassels.

Attach your tassels firmly and weave in ends.  If you want to do something different than tassels, be careful about adding anything like beads or buttons which could be pulled off by an infant and swallowed.

Block hat if desired.

Find a baby to wear it!

No, that’s too small for you, big boy.
